Rotavirus responsible for 40% of severe diarrhea cases in Cameroon (Government Survey)

A vaccine approved by the World Health Organization and UNICEF has been adopted in the Cameroon’s expanded program on immunization. It is under the patronage of the First Lady, Mrs Chantal BIYA that a nationwide campaign was launch last March 28 to sensitize mothers and administer the new vaccine for the fight against diarrhea to children aged from 0-11 months.

After been tested in other countries for the past eight years, the vaccine for the fight against the Rotavirus becomes the eleventh vaccine introduced by the government of Cameroon to reduce child mortality. It is to protect children against vaccine preventable diseases that government created the expanded program on immunization in 2004. The program gains inspiration from the Millennium Development Goal 4 (Target 4.A): Reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate.

The anti-rotavirus life saving mission is expected to kick-start on April 1, 2014 in the ten regions. The vaccination campaign will be spearheaded by medical experts who have as responsibility to multiply vaccination sessions for a proper coverage. The Governor of the South West Region, Bernard OKALIA BILAI said the success of the campaign is imperative; he therefore called on the population to collaborate with health personnel so as to ensure the success of the operation.

Thus Saith the Press in the South West Region

Buea aka the town of legendary hospitality has been receiving special attention after the decision of the Head of State in relation to the organization of commemorative activities marking the golden jubilee of reunification. Since then, publishers of local newspapers have dedicated special time treating issues related to preparatory activities and to the historical event itself.

The publications of the fourth week of January 2014 focus more on an allegedly cold war existing between local administrative authorities in the South West Region and the SCNC activists, who are suspected for planning and organizing activities to disrupt the visit of President Paul BIYA in Buea. The Star relays that six member of the group were arrested by police officials and released on bail. The Median of January 20 on its part takes a different angle and says the silence of the SCNC worries government authorities. According to the paper of Ojong steven, administrative authorities have resorted to arrests, detentions and intimidation to silence the militants of the separatist movement.
