CELEBRATION OF THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PRESENCE OF THE MISSIONARY OBLATES OF MARY IMMACULATE IN NORTH CAMEROON

Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the presence of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate Province of North Cameroon and of Mayo Kebbi in Chad this September 11, 2021.

President Paul Biya’s special representative Minister Atanga Nji Paul of Territorial Administration was present in Garoua, North Region accompanied by Governor Jean Abate Edi`i, administrative authorities and some elites of the region. The celebration had bishops from other African countries like Senegal, Guinea Bissau and France with the highlight being the ordination and coronation of four priests and two deacons by the Archbishop of Garoua Faustin Ambassa Ndjodo, who congratulated the newly ordained clergy and encouraged them to first serve man as their mission calls them to this homily. Two of the new Oblate priests and one deacon were sent to Nigeria, one of the priest to Mamfe, and the other priest and deacon remained in the Garoua dioceses. They began with the unveiling and blessing of the jubilee cross at the cathedral of Garoua before moving to the St Peter Parish where the Holy Mass for the ordination and anniversary took place. The prelates extended their appreciation with a special gift to the Head of State through his personal representative Minister Atanga Nji, expressing gratitude that they are amongst the first religious bodies recognized in Cameroon. Over one hundred Oblate priests were present. Set up by the then pope on the 21st of May 1946 to evangelize in the North of Cameroon and Chad. The missionaries of Oblate of Mary Immaculate is a congregation in the catholic church founded on January 1918 by a French priest St Eugène de Mazenod. Today they are in over 60 countries, the Oblates’ mission is to preach the good news of salvation, feed and shelter the poor, care for orphans, sick and elderly. They are also engaged in education.
